X SVO School: Programme

It is important to have installed beforehand in your laptops the VO-tools to be used in the School, namely:

  • ALADIN (Download the Aladin.jar file and execute it from a terminal using “java -Xmx2048m -jar Aladin.jar”)
  • TOPCAT (Download the topcat-full.jar file and execute it from a terminal using “java -jar topcat-full.jar”)
  • VOSA (Web server. You don't need to install anything)
  • STILTS (Download the stilts.jar file and execute it from a terminal using “java -jar stilts.jar”)

Day 1. Monday 6 March

  • 15:30 - 15:35 Welcome (Jorge A. Pérez)

    • Cristóbal Bordiú. "Finding evolved massive stars with VO" (PDF)
  • 16:40 - 17:30 Feedback and wrap up.
    • Lack of tools for spectroscopic analysis.
      • The progress in VO spectroscopic tools is not keeping pace with the progress of other tools like Aladin, TOPCAT or VOSA. At present, in my opinion, they are good to discover, gather and visualize data but not for analysis. The solution is not trivial. Maybe the best solution would be to contact people working in automated data reduction in the large spectroscopic surveys (WEAVE, RAVe, Gaia-ESO, LAMOST) and encourage them to make their tools VO-compliant (basically good input-output communication with  tools like SPLAT).
    • Would like some more tools focused on Extragalactic sources, specially the catalogues based on spectroscopy from this objects.
